Secrets of Music Practice

7 Secrets of Music Practice for young children to get the most Results out of your Music Lessons from Yana Weaver:

Dear Parents! Today I want to share with you some secrets on how to help your little musician to enjoy practicing music. I’ve been teaching piano for over 20 years now, and combining all this experience I came up with 7 simple rules. Please, follow it every day and your child will achieve great results in playing music instruments!

1. Have your child practice at the exact same time every day. Just like brushing your teeth!
2. Be with your child during music practice. Children are not capable of organizing the work space as an adult can. So you need to look at your music teacher notes to follow the home work.
3. Ask your little student to study the music books at the same order every time. Just follow the teacher notes. If you do that, you will have your child playing the songs in exact same order as it was done during the music lesson. It will make them feel better, because they will know how much more they have to play.
4. Make little cards with numbers from 0 to 4 (with only one number written on each card). Turn those cards so your child can’t see the numbers and ask your little one to pick the card. Then turn it to see a number. That would be the number of times your wonderful musician needs to play specific song. If it’s 0, how lucky! If it is 4, there is no way not to do it! Play 4 times! Be very strict about the rules!
5. Do Not have any distractions during music practice: such as TV, radio, other kids playing on site, laud conversation and so on. Try to have the practice with closed doors. It’s so much more difficult for a child to stay focused than for an adult. Let’s not make our little musicians work more than they have to!
6. Make the practice environment most comfortable: have enough light pointed at the music books and the instrument. You don’t want your child’s eyes to be in stress of trying to see the notes. Make sure your child’s clothes are comfy and cozy (so there is no irritation associated with the music practice!). Also is very important NOT to let your child wear anything on the wrists during the practice time, because music technique is relying on flexible and free of any external pressure hands.
7. Give your precious one a day off from music practice with the Great Reward (watching favorite show, going to favorite place, having favorite food and etc.) specifically pointing out that this treat is very deserved and giving for Wonderful Music Practice!
